Unique Paint Colors to Try in Every Room in Your Home

Unique Paint Colors to Try in Every Room in Your Home

You’ve just bought one of the many fantastic Overland Park, KS homes for sale, and now it’s time to start putting your own touches in every room, starting with a fresh coat of colorful paint.

When you bought the home, the walls in every room were probably painted in a neutral color like beige, grey, or off-white. That’s a common practice in the real estate world because sellers need to make their homes appealing to a wide range of buyers who all have different tastes. Rather than distract them with bright and even garish colors, owners are allowing potential buyers to paint a picture in their mind’s eye of what the house could look like if they bought it.

If possible, try to paint the interior before you move all your furniture and possessions into the home. It will make the job much quicker and cleaner if you don’t have to move things around. Depending on how big your house is, it could take just a few days to get the job done.

If that’s not possible, plan out the order you should paint your rooms. You can move items from the room you’re about to paint into other rooms to give yourself plenty of room to do the job right. Also, be sure to cover all furniture and put down drop cloths on the floor to make sure paint splatters don’t get on anything. Finally, it’s time to pick the colors!

You’ll find all sorts of advice on what colors to paint each room in your house. Some interior designers suggest a cohesive palette of no more than five colors, such as white, neutral, and three other colors. Many experts suggest coordinating colors throughout your entire house and not having bold colors that would seem out of place and have a shocking effect on the senses.

Truth is, it’s your house, and you’ll want to stay in it as long as possible to recoup your closing costs and let it start appreciating in value. Therefore, paint each room in whatever color you want. With some planning, it’s possible to come up with a range of unique colors that you can tie together throughout your entire house.

With the help of Redbook, House Beautiful, Better Homes & Gardens, and others, here is a look at some unique colors for every room in your house:

Living Room

Dusty Pink or Grape

According to Redbook, rose-colored hues have come back in popularity as interior colors and will make the most important room in your house feel warm, charming, and inviting. You’ll be spending a lot of time in the living room over the years, so you might as well pick a color you’ll feel comfortable with.

As for Grape, Redbook suggests using this color to give the living room a fun feeling for families. Again, your children will basically grow up in that room, so they’ll probably remember that color for the rest of their lives.

Kitchen

Yellow or Mint

The kitchen is another room where you’ll spend countless hours, so go with a color that makes you feel welcome from the minute you walk in to start the coffee pot at 6 a.m. until you get that midnight snack before turning in.

Why yellow? Redbook says that color will help you feel positive and cheery, a feeling you certainly might need when trying to brush cobwebs out of your eyes during breakfast.

As for mint, pastels are making a resurgence, and mint is one of those colors that bring about a sense of nostalgia and harken back to a pleasant time in your life, perhaps your childhood. This color would probably be a favorite of Baby Boomers, evoking memories of growing up in the 1950s and 60s.

Bathroom

Turquoise or Cool Gray

Here’s a room where you will also start and end your day, as well as spend plenty of time in between. Picking turquoise will help pick up your mood – especially when you’re still half asleep in the morning – and give the relaxing vibe of being at the beach and feeling the refreshing breeze on your face.

As for cool gray, it’s a better choice than a boring white and could give you a tranquil feeling if you need a few minutes to get away from it all.

Dining Room

Red or Gold

Going with red in any room in Overland Park luxury apartments is about as bold of a statement as you can make. So, why not use it in a room where you’ll be entertaining guests at dinner parties for years to come? It will be a true conversation starter, and it will also make everyone feel warm and cheery at the many holidays you will celebrate in the room.

Bedroom

Violet or Jade

Purple jewel tones are colors that can either excite the senses or help tone down the mood in another room where you’ll be spending a significant amount of time. Granted, a lot of that time will be spent sleeping, but for all those other hours, violet can help spark romantic feelings and jade can bring about a sense of tranquility and balance, Redbook says.

Family Room

Orange

Family rooms would seem to be a candidate for a lot of different unique colors since they will get a lot of use from the entire family, and everyone might have a favorite color that they’d like to see on the walls. Orange is a warm hue that can both stimulate the senses and be refreshing, making this a great choice for family rooms.

Home Office

Black, White, or Cobalt

This is the room where you need to have your creative juices flowing, particularly if you’re still working from home due to the pandemic. Black and white is a classic, professional look that will help remind you that you’re there to do work and hopefully motivate you. It might even help take you back in time to the days that were portrayed in “Mad Men.” As for cobalt, it exudes a strong sense of taking control of the situation and coming out on top, no matter what your task is for the day.
